How it works
Sign your files, sell them the way you do now, and check any copy you come across. Here's what happens at each step, minus the parts we keep to ourselves.
Sign
Upload a 3MF or STL, or a ZIP of them. Name the design and choose your copies: one for each place you sell, like your own shop, Etsy and Patreon.
Ghostly registers the design to you and makes a signed file for each copy. A small model takes about two minutes. Large, detailed models take longer, and you can leave the page while it works.
The print check
Every signed copy is sliced and compared with your original before you get it. If anything about how it prints would change, Ghostly leaves the hidden part of the signature out of that copy and tells you. The copy is still registered and labeled to you, and it prints exactly like your original.
Your original file is never changed.
Sell
Download your signed copies and upload each one where it belongs. Buyers download and print them like any other file. Nothing in the model looks, feels or prints different.
Add the Signed by Ghostly badge to your listings if you like. It tells buyers, and anyone thinking about reselling, that your copies can be traced.
Check
When you find your design somewhere it shouldn't be, download it and drop it into Ghostly. The check compares it with every design registered on Ghostly and looks for a signature.
Files that were edited along the way still work. In our tests Ghostly recognized designs after they were saved as STL, moved, turned, scaled, simplified and even cut in half.
What a check tells you.
Every check ends in one of three plain answers.
The signature was found. You see the owner, the design and the exact copy it came from.
Signed by Ghostly. Made by 3MF Labs. This is the Etsy copy.
The file matches a registered design, but no signature was found in it, for example a copy that was never signed.
This closely matches a design registered to 3MF Labs.
Nothing registered on Ghostly matches the file.
No registered design matches this file.
What Ghostly never does.
- Change how your files printEvery copy passes the print check, or the hidden part is left out.
- Stamp anything visibleNo logos, text or extra parts in your model.
- Share or sell your filesYour files are used to sign and recognize your designs, and nothing else.
- Publish how the signature worksResults say what was found. Never where, or how.
What it doesn't promise.
- It doesn't stop copyingNo tool can. Ghostly proves a copy is yours and shows which one it was.
- It doesn't file takedowns for youIt gives you the evidence. What you do with it is up to you.
- It isn't unbreakableNothing hidden in a file is. Ghostly is built so that everyday edits don't break it.
